Raising Attainment - Climbing to Excellence Project

Name of School: Chace Community School Contact person: Ann Trezona - atrezona@chace.enfield.sch.uk
The focus of the project is:
To embed and extend the ‘Climbing to Excellence’ project piloted in 2007/8 with Year 11 at Chace using the expertise of Highlands School (the lead school) by:
* building on lessons learned during the pilot * implementing new strategies in 2008/9 * extending the work done in 2007/8 into Year 10 * adapting and applying strategies that are currently being employed at Highlands.

Describe how your proposed project is innovative and explain how it ensures the development of excellence?
We are keen to embed the DCSF ‘Climbing to Excellence’ project led by Sir John Rowling, an innovative motivational project which aims to identify and address underachievement of students in their GCSEs, raise standards and improve individual performance, so creating increased opportunities for students to proceed at Post 16.

What is the time frame/plan of action for your project?
1 year as a Partnership for Excellence funded project to give us time to improve and refine the work done in the pilot and embed good practice.

What are your process of evidence collection and evaluation to measure impact (methodology)?
Tracking Year 10 into Year 11 using CAT scores, KS3 results, predicted grades (including FFT, YELLIS and teacher predictions) at the start of year 10 compared against GCSE results in August to see what difference the project has made with a targeted group of students and hence the overall school results.
What outcomes are you expecting – how could these be demonstrated/shared?
Improved motivation and performance of a group of ‘key marginal’ (C/D) students identified by close rounds of monitoring. Strategies extended to the entire Year 11 to improve motivation and GCSE performance. We will gladly share our expertise and findings.
