Inclusion / Student Leadership
Inclusion and student leadership
The focus of the project is to improve the performance of our gifted and talented children in Year 6 by giving them access to the KS3 curriculum at Kingsmead Secondary School. We aim to raise the achievements of these children primarily through building their self-confidence and belief in themselves. We propose to transport a group of G&T pupils to Kingsmead for one afternoon a week over two terms. Pupils will study the development of written language with the aim of developing speaking and listening and problem solving skills.
The project is innovative as we are looking at along term commitment for teaching and learning from our secondary school partner. The project will involve leading practitioners from both school – an AST at Kingsmead and an AHT at Cuckoo Hall. We aim to provide a unique opportunity for our pupils by enabling them to work closely with staff and pupils in a secondary school setting.
The time scale is initially from September 2008 to Summer 2009, with the possibility of long term work.
We plan to have an initial meeting with staff from Kingsmead to plan the project/learning carefully. It is then hoped that the children will be enthused by an educational visit. The children will work with various members of staff at Kingsmead, on a weekly basis, with the aim of producing an exhibition which charts the history of the written word. This will give the children an opportunity to showcase, share and discuss what they have learnt with wider members of our school community. We aim to carry out a number of excursions during the course of the project. These will enhance and support the children’s learning about with the Advanced Skills Teacher.
What are your process of evidence collection and evaluation to measure impact (methodology)?
Short term evidence collection will be through pupils’ work, assessment/tracking and reviews of pupil’s IEPs, along with feedback from pupils, staff and parents. Longer evidence collection would be to continue to track these pupils to assess the impact of this work on KS3 assessments.
What outcomes are you expecting – how could these be demonstrated/shared?
In terms of pupil outcomes it is anticipated that pupils will further develop their thinking and problem solving skills and that the project will have a significant impact on their self esteem and transition to secondary school.
It is also hoped that the two schools will develop a sustainable working partnership.
