The Skys the Limit Inclusion Programme
The focus of the project is:
To re-design an inclusion project ‘The Sky’s the Limit’. This project 30 Year 9 students and 10 Year 10 students. The yr group is made up of 10 AG&T, 10 students identified as being particularly at risk of not coping with the transition from KS3 to 4 and 10 disengaged students at risk of exclusion. The 10 Year 10 students are students who came on the old style project in 2007 and have applied to be team leaders for ‘Sky 2008’. The project begins with a 4 day residential course where students are provided with the opportunity, through a series of workshops, to develop strategies to enable them to be more successful at school and raise their aspirations. Students are also taught about pedagogical theories to enable them to become more effective learners, and to share these theories with others back at school. The students become a part of a team that has a strong role to play during the rest of their time at school whether it be organising events , peer mentoring or delivering presentations to others
Describe how your proposed project is innovative and explain how it ensures the development of excellence?
This project will see the setting up of a group of students who will become lead learners in the classroom and around the school. We envisage these students working with the school council, delivering assemblies and working with KS2 students from feeder primaries, attending transition KS2 to 3 meetings and events. They will form a team of students who will observe student learning as opposed to the teacher teaching. They will be trained to deliver feedback to students about what needs to be improved by them, as responsible learners, in lessons.
What is the time frame/plan of action for your project?
The project will begin in May 2008 with the residential. The activities will roll out through the next year at intervals.
What are your process of evidence collection and evaluation to measure impact (methodology)?
All activities are evaluated by all students involved. This ‘Sky’ group will be tracked and monitored in terms of their own achievement at appropriate Key Stages. We will carefully monitor the classes that have been observed by the ‘Sky’ group, for signs of positive change.
What outcomes are you expecting – how could these be demonstrated/shared?
• Contribution to school life e.g. organising events, peer mentoring or delivering presentations to others
• Positive behaviour and attitude, working towards a reduction in fixed-term exclusions
• Students to share theories learnt and communicate at assemblies
• Students to continue involvement with school council, building on and maintaining the team approach.
