'The Super Learning Day on 'Learning Creatively' at Turin Grove offered 150 year 8s and 120 year 5s from Cuckoo Hall and Eldon Juniors a chance to work together and learn about how their brains work in a friendly and collaborative environment!
They were allocated places at tables with mixed age groups, supported by TAs and year 10s. The year 10s acted as student leaders and demonstrated the 'living brain' to the whole group. After a break for some fruit, they broke out into 10 different creative workshops, led by Turin Grove teachers from different subject areas working in pairs. In one workshop, the children made soundscapes, mixing graphic images and music. In another, they made a group painting inspired by an African story. Other workshops included making a funny face pizza, acting out the story of Dr Faustus, learning about the solar system through drama, creating a lunar theme park, playing communication games, making an advert and filming it, learning maths through dance and understanding attitudes to crime and punishment across cultures and different ages through role plays.
At the end of each half-day sessions, the year 10s presented the younger children with certificates and from the evaluations by teachers, Year 10s and the year 8 and 5 students, nearly everyone enjoyed the day. Some year 5s wanted to come to Turin Grove for secondary education, the year 10s loved supporting and helping the younger children and the teachers enjoyed working with small numbers, with a colleague from a different academy or from the
primary school. As one child wrote, it was 'TURINTASTIC!!!!'
